Wireless Router

Wireless router is very important for personal network living.

From technology, Wireless router is mainly classified in wireless wifi router, wireless wimax router, and wireless cell router.
From used filed, wireless router is classified soho (also called in non-industrial) class, and industrial class for Industrial Ethernet Router.
SOHO is for large data use, for example 3G router (including EVDO Router, HSDPA Router, and HSUPA Router, and HSPA Router.)

A wireless router is a device that performs the functions of a router but also includes the functions of a wireless access point and a network switch. They are commonly used to allow access to the Internet or a computer network without the need for a cabled connection. It can function in a wired LAN (local area network), a wireless only LAN (WLAN), or a mixed wired/wireless network. Most current wireless routers have the following characteristics:

1. LAN RJ45 ports, normally 1 or 2 or 4 ports, which function in the same manner as the ports of a network switch
2.      A WAN port, normally 1 RJ45 port to connect to a wide area network, typically one with Internet access. External destinations are accessed using this port. If it is not used, many functions of the router will be bypassed.
3.      Wireless antennae. These allow connections from other wireless devices (NICs (network interface cards), wireless repeaters, wireless access points, and wireless bridges, for example), usually using the Wi-Fi standard.
4.      Some wireless routers also include a DSL or cable modem in addition to their other components.

As for the wireless antenna, contains GSM/3G cellular antenna and WiFi/Wimax antenna, with different connecting type, such as SMA. Normally antenna is default packed by manufacturer. High gain antenna is available for replacement to receive better and stronger signal so as to get good receiving and transmission of data.

Cellular Router and Modem Difference

Cellular RouterA cellular router short for cell router, is a router provides shared Internet access by incorporating a cellular data modem and providing common interfaces like Ethernet and WiFi. Different cellular routers work on different networks.
Cellular network are divided into GSM cellular, CDMA cellular and 3G cellular, meanwhile, there are GSM router, CDMA Router and 3G Router.
They can be deployed as a primary WAN link to a location where wired connections are not cost-effective, can also be used as a secondary or business continuity plan should the primary cabled link fail, or can be used in moving vehicles to provide Internet access while in motion. Cellular routers range from simple SOHO network oriented devices through rugged industrial units with advanced features.
For SOHO and high data requirement, 3G Router are the best to use. For small data package transmission, GSM router and CDMA router are enough.
EVDO Router, HSDPA Router, HSUPA Router and HSPA Router are hot used in many different areas such as coffee shop, small shop, home, airport, etc.

Cellular Modem

A cellular modem is a modem provides internet access by the cellular networks on GPRS/EDGE/HSDPA/HSUPA/HSPA or CDMA/EVDO networks.
Cellular modem provides a USB port or RS232 port. USB port is for high speed data transmission. RS232 port normally is for industrial application for SMS and small package data transmission.
Router support route features, we can think it built-in modem. Modem is a simple dialing device.
Cellular Router contains Industrial Ethernet Router and SOHO Router.

How to setup a 3G Mobile Router?

How to setup a 3G Mobile Router?

Normally we know 3G mobile router contains two types. One is built-in wireless module, just get a sim card and make a right configuration, then it will work. The other one is with USB host port, requires a USB 3g wireless modem, insert the sim card into the USB modem, then make configuration and work.

So normally the required items are as follows,
1.       A SIM card with data business and balance.
2.       USB modem is required for the non-built-in module type router.
3.       Good signal for the sim card of the site.

Now come to the SIM Card Configuration. Actually it’s for APN configuration.
Each model of cellular router 3g umts router requires a APN setting before dialup to the internet.

What is APN? APN is access point name. Each network provider has a unique APN for the access ID. Such as China Mobile GPRS Network’s APN is cmnet.
Except APN, dialing number (service code) and username, password is required more or less upon different network service provider.

So general speaking, four parameters are import for the configuration.
1. APN
2. Dialing number (Service Code)
3. Username
4. Password
After input and setting these four parameters, save it, and try to connect the internet, and find the router will connect to the network perfectly.

A Typical Question for Cell Router

We often meet cell router users to ask such questions.
Someone asks “How do set up a Wifi router when the main computer uses a router to get the internet?”
It’s a typical question while using the cell router, especially an Industrial Ethernet Router.

The popular cell router is 3g hspa router with maximum 14.4Mbps download speed or even higher.

Details is as follows:
My computer has a router to connect it to the internet. Well I bought a Wifi router so that I could share the connection but I don’t know how to set it up.
Answer 1: We can draw a map like:
Router —> Wifi Router ——> Wired/wireless computers.
You need to attach the router cable with the WAN side of wifi router and then attach all your computers with the Wifi router either through a cable or wirelessly.
Answer 2: Are you using a “router” that plugs directly into your computer rather than a separate box that is wired in? I have a friend who used one of those and tried to use that computer as a router / gateway using the cell card / router in that machine. In short, it didn’t work.
You can buy a special router that accepts cell based router cards that then act as a normal wired router so you can connect other wireless routers (some may have a built in wireless so you don’t have to get a separate one) and/or other computers to it.

EVDO Cell Router

What is an EVDO Cell Router?
Simply speaking, Cell EVDO Router is a router working with cellular networks based on CDMA2000 EVDO technologies.

EVDO Cell Router contains all other main feature from other normal routers. Such as DNS, DDNS, DMZ, NAT, Firewall, VPN, WiFi 802.11a/b/g/n, route, etc..

And here is a simple application.
If you need cell network access and flexible routing, you may look on routers with USB jacks. For example people created firmware for WL500GP (and similar devices) which includes drivers for USB-to-Serial ICs (used in mobile phone cables, usb-to-com port converters, etc) so you can attach cell phone or COM-port modem to a router and for example, use it as your backup link (implementing logic you need will require some scripting but that's not a rocket science). Surely this not so easy and requires certain efforts and Linux knowledge but this is way to go if you need something working over cellular network and flexibly routed right
I doubt there is lots of people who uses EVDO or
3g mobile router so I doubt it will have awful market success.

Actually, EVDO Cell Router is mainly used for wired backup. Once your wired cable internet connection is failed, you can switch it to EVDO connection. With maximum 3.1Mbps download speed.
